Nahki Wells gets reward for going ‘back to basics’
Nahki Wells is delighted to be back among the goals after grabbing a vital equaliser to rescue a point for Luton Town in a 2-2 draw at home to League One rivals Lincoln City at the weekend.
The Bermuda striker struck a thunderous finish into the bottom corner to bring the teams level after the away side had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead through strikes from Freddie Draper and Rob Street.
Gideon Kodua pulled one back for the home side before Wells’s sublime finish restored parity to cap an entertaining first half at Kenilworth Road.
“It’s not often I get those goals as usually I’m a fox in the box at the right place at the right time,” Wells said on the Luton Town website.
“But today I kept repeating to myself that I had to try to be a little bit more selfish and try to take that risk.
“Cal played it into me, I turned, saw space and went for it, so gratefully it flew in the bottom corner.
“You have to take the risk to get it and at times I probably haven’t. I’ve had some low moments this season but performances of late, and team performances as well, have helped me and I’m growing.
“I know my impact on and off the pitch as a player and it was sweet moment to get us back in the game today.
“I really felt like the goal was going to be a turning point for us and that we would go out and get the winner. Unfortunately they defended for their lives and it didn’t necessarily drop perfectly for me.
“Delighted to get that type of goal but disappointed to not leave here with three points.”
Wells’s confidence has been restored after going through a tough period and he attributes his form to “stripping it back to basics”.
“I’ve never really cut any corners as a player but no matter how many trials and tribulations you experience, when you care a lot it sometimes has that impact,” he said.
“I missed a few penalties and it really took me to rock bottom and had me questioning things because I knew I was doing everything right on and off the pitch and I was questioning ‘why me?’
“I wasn’t too disappointed about missing them because I’ve missed plenty and scored loads in my career. It’s just one of those moments where after really peeling back to basics and trusting the process, I’ve played myself out of that and performances have shown.
“Obviously I want to score more goals and contribute more from a numbers perspective but I’m far from the selfish player. I just want to be a part of something successful and win ― I couldn’t care less if it was others doing it.
“That’s not always the right mentality. But to be a part of something special and to be a part of a team that’s going well is the right mentality. I just want to make sure I have an input and make sure we get to where we need to get to this season.
“This group a few months ago wouldn’t have been able to win that game but we’re building that camaraderie and the group is coming together nicely.
“With the odd addition we’re going to continue to get better, make this place a fortress and the fans will buy into that.
“They’re starting to see the style and play and what we’re trying to implement out there. I’m just disappointed that a team above us we couldn’t take points off them.
“But we showed real desire to come from behind and that’s what it takes. That’s what the supporters really want to see and I’m sure we’re going to continue to get better and teams will know.
“They’ll watch our performance and recognise a team growing in confidence and building. We just have to take it one game at a time.”
