Senoj Mitchell netted his second hat-trick of the season as Devonshire Colts hit Corona League opponents Young Gunz Sound FC for six to advance to the next round in the FA Cup at Police Field on Sunday.
The Premier Division’s leading scorer opened his account from the penalty spot just before the break and struck twice after to complete the treble, while Jorj Dublin (pen), Elisha Darrell and substitute Chemarl Henry were also on target for the home side, who also had a goal waved offside and struck the woodwork three times.
Colts central defender Dublin was delighted to see his team progress to the next round of the prestigious competition.
“I am happy to be advancing and I think it was a good performance from us,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“I think we played well and definitely put the ball in the right areas for our team to be effective.”
Young Gunz, who were without former Premier Division players Dion Stovell (injured), Drewonde Bascome (ineligible), Antwan Russell (ineligible) and Cecoy Robinson (suspended), struggled to get good looks at goal and also had a penalty saved.
Colts took only two minutes to open their account in controversial fashion. Young Gunz left back Jerome Bailey was penalised for a contentious foul on Mitchell in the area and Dublin converted from 12 yards to make the early breakthrough for the hosts.
Striker Darrell doubled Colts’ advantage in the 31st minute after getting on the end of left back Mateo Isaac’s cross in a crowded box before forward Mitchell effectively ended the cup tie as a contest two minutes before the interval ― converting a penalty after being brought down in the area by Young Gunz central defender Tyrell Burgess to make it 3-0.
Mitchell grabbed a second in the 54th minute after springing the offside trap and smashing the ball past Young Gunz stopper Amanat Takhar after being picked out by Jahzardae Samuels’ defence-splitting pass.
The away side were awarded a penalty of their own when Dominique Williams was bundled over in the area by Dublin but after dusting himself off Williams had his effort saved, who went full stretch to deny the striker.
Colts coach Ray Jones was forced to make an unscheduled substitution when midfielder Javier Jackson pulled up with cramp and was replaced by Henry.
The home side had the ball in the back of the net again but their celebrations were quickly muted as Sage Blair-Paynter’s goal was waved offside.
Mitchell completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute with another neat finish after being played through on goal by Henry for his fifteenth goal of the season.
The pair also linked up nicely together to contribute to their team’s sixth and final goal with Mitchell this time providing the assist for Henry, who rifled the ball past Takhar.
Young Gunz winger Saki Tuzo felt the early penalty awarded to Colts had a big impact on his team.
“We did the best we could to frustrate Colts but that early penalty kind of hurt us,” he said. “Things happen, calls get made but we’re not going to get into all of that.
“Otherwise I think it was a good match. We had a couple of guys away and a couple injured so we did the best we could with the team we had.
“We had a good run and put our best foot forward. We will be back next year and hopefully it will be a better run.”
