Nahki Wells helps Luton Town get promotion bid back on track
Nahki Wells helped Luton Town get back to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 win at home to League One rivals Blackpool at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.
Midfielder and Hatters captain Jordan Clark was the toast of the dressing room as his eighth goal of the season secured the points for the home side and snapped a two-game losing streak to revive their promotion hopes.
Wells was one of two changes to Jack Wilshere’s starting XI from the previous outing against the Bermuda striker’s former club Huddersfield Town and had his share of chances in the match.
The 35-year-old had two shots saved and also nodded Shayden Morris’s cross wide at the back post before being replaced in the 68th minute.
Clark grabbed the winner three minutes after Wells’s departure, thumping a low drive from just inside the box into the corner of the net to earn his team their fourth win in their past five games at home.
The result lifted the Hatters back up into seventh place in the League One standings, six points adrift of the play-off positions.
Elsewhere in League One, Nathan Trott’s Cardiff City saw their lead at the summit reduced to two points after being held to a 2-2 draw away to relegation-threatened Burton Albion at Pirelli Stadium on the same day.
Cardiff were forced to chase the game after Bermudian goalkeeper Trott was unable to stop Brewers forward Jake Beesley’s bicycle kick, which earned the home side a 1-0 advantage at the break.
The home side equalised a minute after the restart through midfielder Alex Robertson, who struck again in the 63rd minute to put the Bluebirds in front for the first time.
However, the visitors were unable to cling to their slim advantage as midfielder Kyran Lofthouse equalised in the 78th minute for the Brewers, who dropped into the relegation zone despite having gained a valuable point on their own patch.
The draw was Cardiff’s third in their past five matches.
