Bermuda under-17 face Guyana in World Cup Qualifiers
Bermuda under-17 are now just two matches away from the World Cup after their Concacaf qualifying group was reduced to just three teams.
Bermuda will now need to win just two matches against Guyana on Friday and hosts Honduras on Wednesday to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar after Suriname withdrew from the competition.
Coach Aaron Denkins is unfazed despite one of his scheduled opponents pulling out at short notice with the aim remaining the same regardless of the number of matches played.
“Suriname withdrawing does not really affect us,” Denkins told The Royal Gazette.
“We still have to win the group as only group winners advance to the World Cup.”
After a five-day training camp in Orlando, Florida, Denkins’s side arrived in Honduras earlier in the week.
“We arrived in Honduras on Wednesday and trained on Thursday morning,” the coach said.
“Players are adjusting to the weather change and are in good spirits. The Bermuda Football Association has a functional high-performance department that has been consistently supporting the coaching staff with video, data and match analysis on the opponents, so we are comfortable that we are prepared for our match on Friday. As always, we are looking to play to our potential and make Bermuda proud.”
With Curtis Jackson Jr, Amir Brangman-Johnson, Tyler Steede and Na’im Zuill carrying experience from the last year’s qualifiers, Bermuda appear to stand a chance against Guyana with the clash against Honduras, the sixth best team in the Concacaf men’s rankings, set to provide a challenge for the island’s young footballers.
Anybody wishing to watch the game in Bermuda can tune in to Disney+ at 6pm on Friday night.
