Somerset Trojans make inroads in title bid
Somerset Trojans capitalised on leaders Robin Hood’s slip to enhance their own First Division title hopes at the weekend.
Hood, who have dropped four points in their last two league outings, were fortunate to escape with a 1-1 draw away at Southampton Rangers, while Trojans prevailed 3-1 away at St David’s Warriors.
Hood top the table on goal difference over fellow title hopefuls Trojans, with the two teams set to clash in a potential league decider on the final day of the 2025-26 league campaign.
The pair are within striking distance of clinching promotion, with both requiring five points and Trojans having a game in hand.
Hood were forced to chase the game after Rangers’ Cijay Samuels put the home side in front in the 67th minute at Southampton Oval on Saturday.
Rangers fought desperately to cling to their one-goal advantage but their efforts fell in vain as Tokia Bean brought the teams level two minutes from the end of regulation time.
Trojans started their match against St David’s at Lord’s 24 hours later with a psychological advantage and jumped into a 2-0 lead through a Jamere Jervis own goal and Jalen Greaves’s 61st minute strike.
Christian King pulled one back for St David’s before Kameron McNeil restored Trojans’ two-goal cushion in the 88th minute.
Bottom side Vasco pulled off the weekend’s biggest upset with a stunning 4-2 win over Wolves at Police Field on Sunday.
Wolves entered the contest on a high after pulling off an upset of their own last time against leaders Hood but they were forced to play catch-up after Kevin Aruda earned Vasco the lead on the stroke of half time.
Wolves equalised shortly after the restart through Jarred Douglas’s 54th minute strike but the game took another twist when Lucas DeSilva Marcal put Vasco back in front in the 71st minute before former PHC player Antwan Russell and Ludgero Filipe Mederios Ponte scored in the space of six minutes to all but secure the points.
Khiari Sharrieff-Hayward pulled one back for the away side in the 88th minute but by then the damage had already been done.
Somerset Eagles, whose title and promotion hopes remain alive with three games in hand, received a bye.
