Watch: Jace Donawa wonder strike features in ESPN Plays of the Day
Move over David Beckham as Bermudian Jace Donawa has announced his arrival on the free-kick scene.
Donawa has been attracting attention from around the world after his stunning set piece for the Bermuda team against Costa Rica in the Concacaf Under-20 Championship caught the eyes of millions.
The young forward featured at No 6 in ESPN SportsCenter’s Plays of the Day, which regularly features the best daily action from around the world. Donawa’s effort was preceded by Sam Steel’s behind-the-back assist to Matt Duchene of Dallas Stars in the NHL, while the best play of the day was Martin Setriano’s spectacular winning volley for Getafe against Real Madrid in La Liga.
Donawa plays for the University of North Carolina, which posted a video on Instagram of the swerving, dipping free kick to their 41,000 followers, while Nahki Wells also sent out a post featuring the Bermuda flag to his 25,000 followers. Concacaf’s X account, which has 427,000 followers, also put out a video of the extraordinary moment,
But it is ESPN’s signature news and information programme SportsCenter, one of the leading place for sports fans to go to on television, that provides the big numbers.
On air at various times in a 24-hour period, the programme averages three million viewers per day.
Donawa is next action on Wednesday when Bermuda take on Barbados in their last match of the Under-20 Championship group stage. The game takes place at 1pm Bermuda time.
