Bermuda showed some improvement in a 9-0 loss to Puerto Rico in their second match at the Concacaf Women’s Under-17 World Cup Qualifiers in Costa Rica on Thursday.

Coming off a heavy loss at the hands of the United States on Tuesday, Gary Adams’s side played with intent and registered six shots, with one of those on target.

Speaking to broadcasters after the match, captain Zelaye Showers lamented the injuries suffered by her team, as Mirabella Lohan, a 65th-minute replacement for Janiya Sealey, was stretchered off the pitch in the 77th minute, with her place taken by Daisy Langley.

Earlier on, left back Tayte Glasgow had also limped off hurt to make way for Priya Dill in the 55th.

“It was not really the result we wanted,” Showers said.

“As you can see, we had a few injuries so we had to make a few subs and we just didn’t execute what we wanted.

“We could work better as a team. Just the simple stuff like playing quicker and just staying positive.”

Goalkeeper Kyra Simmons made a couple of saves in the first half, but on two occasions the rebounds were pounced on by the Puerto Rico forwards.

Milan Gibbons-Thomas, who was taken off in the 35th minute against the US, had Bermuda’s best chance six minutes before half time. The powerful forward took a crack at goal, but her right-footed shot was saved by Victoria Moore.

Four minutes after the break, Simmons produced an incredible save to deny Giselle Falcon, who scored a brace together with captain Camila Adame. The Bermuda goalkeeper sprang to action in the 55th to push behind Mía Colón’s well-struck shot for a corner.
