Hornets seeking to close in on Premier Division glory
Leaders Dandy Town will attempt to make another step towards a first Premier Division title in four years and tenth overall when they host X-Roads Warriors at White Hill Field tomorrow.
Jarreau Hayward’s team are on a five-game unbeaten streak and will fancy their chances of success against a X-Roads side they beat 2-0 in the first league meeting between the pair in December.
Hornets top the standings by three points over second place PHC Zebras and are five clear of third place Devonshire Colts, who have a game in hand over their fellow title contenders.
PHC and Devonshire Colts, who relinquished precious ground in the title race after playing out a goalless draw in their previous league outing, will be hoping to get back to winning ways and revive their championship aspirations.
Zebras host a Paget Lions side that have all but secured their Premier Division status for next season at PHC Field; while Devonshire Colts are away to relegated Boulevard in the first match of a double header at Devonshire Rec (6pm) in a contest that was postponed last night due to rain and rescheduled.
In the second game, Devonshire Cougars face Dudley Eve Trophy champions St George’s Colts (8pm), in another match rearranged because of the bad weather.
Elsewhere, Young Men’s Social Club find themselves in a must-win situation if they are to avoid being relegated along with Blazers. But they are facing a daunting task against hosts and champions North Village at Bernard Park in the weekend’s remaining Premier Division fixture.
As it stands, Bluebirds are five points adrift of Paget, who also have a game in hand with title hopefuls Devonshire Colts.
The First Division championship will be decided tomorrow with promoted sides Robin Hood and Somerset Trojans doing battle in the title decider at Police Field.
Leaders Trojans top the standings by a point over hosts Hood but have their work cut out against their opponents, who beat them 2-1 in the first league meeting between the sides in December and also dashed their Shield hopes in a controversial semi-final.
The remaining second tier fixtures pit Shield champions Somerset Eagles against Southampton Rangers in the opening match of a double header at White Hill Field and St David’s against bottom side Vasco da Gama at Lord’s.
It remains to be seen whether Vasco take to the pitch having forfeited their previous matches against Trojans and Eagles.
