Bermuda put on a great show despite suffering a narrow 2-0 loss to Haiti in their final group B match at the Concacaf Women’s Under-17 World Cup Qualifiers in Costa Rica on Sunday.

Hunting for their first win of the tournament after losses to the United States and Puerto Rico, Gary Adams’s side were pegged back in the second minute when Adjani Kamanzi-Mondestin put Haiti ahead.

From there, Bermuda, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, went toe-to-toe with their opponents who are ranked sixth in Concacaf for the age group.

With 44 per cent ball possession, the Lady Gombey Warriors had 12 shots, with three of those on target.

In her post-match remarks, Bermuda captain Zelaye Showers focused on persevering as a team after a difficult tournament.

“The lessons are just to stay positive and keep going,” Showers said.

“The result is not what we wanted, but we got to this round so we're happy as a team. We worked hard, we stayed together, we worked to the very last whistle and that’s kind of a success for us.

“We can improve for the next tournament by doing the simple things during training, working hard and staying consistent.”

Milan Gibbons-Thomas showed her power in the twentieth minute with a right-footed shot from outside the box, which was taken care of by Abeegayel Favilus.

In the 29th minute, Daley Outerbridge’s stinging attempt from a difficult angle on the right was pushed behind for a corner by Favilus.

Cayli Dowling, who had been outstanding for Bermuda in midfield, was stretchered off injured before she was replaced by Avery Taylor in the 41st minute.

In the 59th minute, Kyra Simmons made a brilliant save to keep out an effort from Samira Ductan before the same player rattled the upright a minute later.

Simmons came up with another great stop in the 81st as Alyssa Manasse took aim at goal from close range.

Outerbridge produced a banger in the 83rd minute which rattled the top of the crossbar. Gibbons-Thomas had a go from outside the box with five minutes left, but saw the ball swerve to the right and miss the target.

The Bermuda keeper palmed the ball over the bar to repel a shot from Rosalie St Louis in the 86th, but Haiti added a second from the resultant corner through Nya Jean-Baptiste.
