Somerset Trojans crowned First Division champions
Somerset Trojans added more sparkle to ‘Silver City’ after being crowned First Division champions at the weekend.
The west enders prevailed 2-0 over Robin Hood in the title decider between the promoted sides at PHC Field on Sunday, with the evergreen Leo Burgess leading the charge with a second-half brace.
The experienced player broke the deadlock in the 50th minute from the penalty spot after being bundled over from behind in the box and then capitalised on a one-on-one situation in the 72nd minute to put the match beyond Hood’s reach.
Trojans head coach Danvers Seymour Jr was thrilled to see his team round off the season in style.
“We are proud to have achieved our main season objective of promotion and winning the First Division title,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“Over the past few years our aim has been to build our team around young Somerset players, players who have came through the youth programme and have a heart to play for the community.
“It’s is fulfilling to see our long-term vision to start to bare fruit. Within the past five years the young players have achieved success at every age level, going from winning titles at the Under-15, Under-18 and Under-23 levels and now First Division champions.
“That’s big for the programme and it’s all coming together. With the blend of youth and experienced players we hope to continue to build a sustainable structure for the future of Trojans.
“We are only halfway there. Our ultimate aim is to be successful at the highest level and compete for Premier Division trophies. The coaching staff has done an amazing job throughout the season which cannot go without mention.
“Last but not least my father Danny Seymour, who has been my mentor and inspiration partner on this journey. He would be proud of this achievement and I dedicate to him.”
Trojans assistant coach Jensen Rogers was happy to see his team execute against a Hood side that won the previous two encounters between the sides this season in the league and Shield semi-finals.
“It was a really good game,” he said.
“Robin Hood did have their moments with Keishen Bean hitting the crossbar when they had a moment of sustained pressure, but we executed the game plan and secured the victory.”
Elsewhere, Shield champions Somerset Eagles and Southampton Rangers battled to a 1-1 stalemate at White Hill Field.
Eagles talisman Nathan Rego put the hosts out front in the 39th minute before Malachi Jones equalised a minute later to earn the visitors a share of the spoils.
The remaining First Division fixture featured St David’s Warriors handing Vasco da Gama a 3-1 loss at Lord’s.
The hosts jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after Aaron Paynter struck in the 11th and 14th minutes before Jamere Jervis added another in the 79th minute.
Vasco, who forfeited their previous two league fixtures with Trojans and Eagles, replied through Jayden Smith’s 45th minute consolation.
