Applications for the vacant role as head coach of the senior men’s football team position have been recieved, despite the Bermuda Football Association not yet advertising the job.

Maurice Lowe, the BFA technical development director who took charge for the team for the international friendly against Democratic Republic of Congo this week, has revealed there has been plenty of interest from coaches wanting to replace Michael Findlay.

Lowe will be part of the process for recruiting Bermuda’s next coach along with the association’s player development committee.

“We haven’t put out an advertisement for head coach, but just from the media coverage, we’re receiving lots of applications and CVs from far and wide,” Lowe told The Royal Gazette.

“We’re getting lots of interest. I wouldn’t say the applications are flooding the BFA, but they’re definitely coming in. But I must say I’m not by myself in this, we also have the player development committee that will go through an interview process.”

With Bermuda looking to make use of the June international window to prepare for the start of the Nations League in September, expectations are that the position will be filled before that break.

“We need to have a fixed date of closing the position as quickly as we can,” Lowe said.

“Because, again, we’re trying to prepare for September, so we want to give the new coach, whoever that may be, an opportunity to prepare the team well.

“You’ve got the Nations League starting up in September, which is in a few months’ time. There’s another Fifa window coming up in June and we’ll look to take another opportunity to prepare ourselves for the Nations League proper in September.”

Lowe was assisted in Mexico by Jake Littlejohn, a Fifa talent development coach and X-Roads head coach Farid El Karfa and he praised the two coaches for coming up with a strategy to deal with the higher-ranked African side.

“With Jake Littlejohn and Farid El Karfa, our opposition analyst, we set ourselves up really well,” he said.

“The DR Congo coach gave praise to our players for the way we set up and the challenge that we provided for them as they go into their World Cup qualifying play-off.”

El Karfa enjoyed his first international coaching experience, with the Moroccan keen to be part of the technical team even when the new coach comes in.

“I have been honoured to be a part of the national team coaching staff representing Bermuda in a friendly against DR Congo,” he said.

“The experience in whole has been a great one, working with some of the most qualified coaches in Bermuda, Maurice Lowe as well as Jake Littlejohn, the Fifa talent development coach.

“The whole group of staff worked in harmony, which made it an enjoyable experience for me. Finally, it gave me pleasure to work with some of Bermuda’s best young talent on an international stage.

“I hope to be able to continue to be a part of the national team as it is a great pleasure. I’m happy to be in an assistant role at the moment and we’ll see where that leads to.”
