Three teams chase glory on final day

Dandy Town captain Tomiko Goater is in a race against the clock to regain fitness for the Premier Division title decider against St George’s Colts at Wellington Oval tomorrow.

The experienced and influential midfielder suffered a groin injury in Hornets’ previous outing against Paget Lions and at last check remained doubtful for their crunch match-up against Dudley Eve Trophy holders St George’s, with only a win guaranteeing them the title.

Town coach Jarreau Hayward said Goater has been receiving treatment on his injury and will undergo another fitness test before the game in the East End on Sunday to determine whether he is able to rejoin his squad.

“Goater will be evaluated before the game and we will decide his status,” Hayward told The Royal Gazette.

The stakes are indeed high for Town, who top the standings by just two points heading into the final day of the league campaign.

Standing between Hornets and what would be their tenth league title and first in four years, is Hayward’s former club St George’s, who will be hoping to pour cold water on any title aspirations.

“Our match -up on Sunday will be a special occasion,” Hayward said.

“Two really good teams and two special clubs dear to my heart who will provide some great entertainment and I hope everyone comes out to watch.

“We are focused and hopefully we can grab three points on an amazing surface. We aren't focused on the stakes, just the task.

“Drewonde [St George’s coach Drewonde Bascome] is doing an excellent job there, so we will have to be at our best.

“St George’s have had great success this season winning the Dudley Eve, and I'm happy for and proud of my mother club and former team.”

The tight title race has come down to the wire with only three points separating leaders Town from third-place PHC Zebras.

The trio are all facing must-win situations with Colts and Zebras also relying on results to go their way if they are to stand any chance of pipping Hornets for the title.

While Town are facing a tricky contest against a St George’s side capable of beating any team on their day, PHC and Colts are the firm favourites heading into their fixtures against relegated pair Boulevard and Young Men’s Social Club.

Colts coach Ray Jones is excited to be in the title hunt but is not taking anything for granted against Bluebirds when the sides square off at Police Field.

“Regardless of Social Club’s status in the league I know they are going to come to play and we have to be prepared for that,” he said.

“Sunday is a big day and we are happy to be in the conversation even though it's not in our control.

“Our league position is a reflection of the hard work the team has put in since preseason, and I'm grateful to them for that.

“In order to have a chance we have to handle our business and see where the chips fall.

“Our preparation is going on as normal, focusing on us and our upcoming opponent before Sunday’s game.”

Zebras captain Daren Usher admits winning the title is a tall order given the need for the teams above them to drop points heading into his team’s league finale against Blazers at PHC Field.

“Although we are not out of the race we face the difficult task of relying on two teams to do us huge favours,” he said.

“At the end of the day the least we can do is give our fans a good showing and end our season on a high, and however the chips may fall we will take them.

“We’re going to show up ready to play hard regardless because you never know what could happen, and it’s better to lose it knowing we fought to the end rather than giving up at the finish line.”

The remaining top flight fixtures see Devonshire Cougars hosting X-Roads Warriors at Devonshire Rec on Saturday night and Paget facing dethroned champions North Village at White Hill Field on Sunday at 3pm.
