Ray Jones distraught as Colts lose out on league title

Devonshire Colts coach Ray Jones cut a lonely figure at the end of the match at Police Field after missing out on the Premier Division championship to Dandy Town on Sunday.
Colts ended the season with a resounding victory over Young Men’s Social Club, but that was not enough as Jones’s side lost out on the championship to Dandy Town.
Elisha Darrell struck in the tenth and twelfth minutes and Chemarl Henry added a third in the 44th before Senoj Mitchell scored a penalty in the 57th. Relegated Social Club got their goals from Zeiko Lewis, who scored a brace, with the Bermuda forward on target in the 26th and 67th minutes.
“Congratulations to Dandy Town for winning the league,” Jones told The Royal Gazette.
“Consistency won it for them. Last season, 41 points would have won the league, so for them to get 43, obviously they deserve it and hats off to them.
“They had a good season, probably started the best and they were able to maintain a high level. Once we got going, we showed that we deserve to be in the race to the end, it’s just unfortunate that we came up a bit short.
“I’m proud of the way we fought to the end. We only had one loss in 2026 and that was against St George’s Colts. A lot of unfortunate information that we received disrupted our whole day and that loss cost us the league.
“It’s been years since we’ve actually been in contention. Some people might say it’s big improvement, but, that was one of our goals to see if we could win the league based on the recruitment that we had done.”
Colts now shift the focus to the FA Cup, where they face champions North Village in the final next Sunday.
“Mentally, we knew we were relying on a team that’s been inconsistent to help us today, so I won't say it’s put us in a bad space,” Jones said.
“I think our goal was to just keep doing what we do, which is winning. We can have a winning mentality and momentum going into the final.
“Psychologically, I don’t think it’s going to have much of a negative impact. It’s a matter of maybe giving us more emphasis to try and make sure we get the job done next Sunday.”
Despite the loss, Lewis felt that they played one of their best matches of the season.
“To me it’s more about winning than anything else,” he said.
“We all got two goals but at the end of the day we lost so that's upsetting. This is probably some of the best football I’ve played all season, so I’ll be happy about that.
“A lot of this season was a struggle to figure out what we want to do, who we want to be and stuff like that. I think this game we put a lot of what we were lacking before.”
The Bermuda forward, who joined his family club last September, could not be drawn to comment on his future following the team’s relegation.
“I’m a Bluebird right now and at the end of the day I’m always going to be a Bluebird,” he said.
“I’m here and no matter where I am I’m going to give my all at. I’ll always be here for my family and I’ll make a decision at some point, but it won’t be an overnight decision.”
Elisha Darrell pounced for Colts after Social Club goalkeeper Clay Darrell spilt a harmless looking ball from a corner. Darrell notched up his brace in the space of two minutes when he ran through from a Mitchell pass to beat the keeper who was off his line.
The Social Club goalkeeper blocked an effort from Keino Burch in a one-on-one situation in the seventeenth.
Lewis reduced the deficit when he tucked the ball into the far post from a long pass. He had a chance to equalise in the 31st only to be denied by a point-blank save from Jaden Mills-Furbert.
Henry restored the two-goal advantage for Colts a minute before the break with an easy finish from inside the box.
Miscommunication between the Social Club keeper and Teron Butterfield almost gifted Colts a fourth at the start of the second half, but Mitchell’s strike came off the upright. The striker then scored a penalty after he was fouled by the Social Club goalkeeper.
A great ball from Malique Wilson allowed Lewis to score his second in the 68th minute. The forward could have had his hat-trick, had he not fired his effort wide right at the end.
