Nahki Wells doubtful for Wembley final with groin injury
Nahki Wells’ hopes of playing in a third Wembley final hang in the balance after the Luton Town striker came off with a suspected groin injury in his team’s convincing 3-0 win away to Sky Bet League One rivals Wimbledon on Monday.
The Bermuda international retained his spot in Jack Wilshere’s starting XI from the one that edged Peterborough United 2-1 three days earlier but had his afternoon at Cherry Red Records Stadium cut short after his groin issue flared up in the seventeenth minute.
“I felt my groin so I couldn’t continue,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “I don’t think it’s bad, but I won’t know the severity until I’ve scanned it.”
The 35-year-old was making only his second appearance for the Hatters since returning from a hamstring injury in their 2-1 home win against Peterborough United at Kenilworth Road on Good Friday.
It now remains to be seen whether he is available for Luton’s Football League Trophy final showdown against Stockport County at Wembley on Sunday.
Wells is no stranger to Wembley having made two appearances at the iconic stadium with Bradford in the Capital One Cup Final and League Two Play-off Final and another with Huddersfield Town in the League One Play-off Final.
He also scored against Northampton in Bradford’s 3-0 triumph in the 2013 League Two Play-off Final to become the first Bermudian to do so at the new Wembley Stadium.
That feat arrived just shy of three months after becoming the first Bermudian to play at the London venue in the Bantams’ 5-0 defeat to then Premier League opponents Swansea City in the Capital One Cup Final.
Wells was also a member of Carlisle United’s squad that reached the EFL Trophy Final in 2011 but was left out of the match day squad.
The Hatters moved a step closer to clinching a spot in the promotion play-offs after recording their fourth win in five league games against injury ravaged Wimbledon after Wells’ early exit.
They presently sit in tenth, level on 61 points with Wells’ former club Huddersfield Town and three adrift of the play-offs with five league fixtures remaining.
Also in action on Monday was Wells’ fellow Bermudian Nathan Trott, whose Cardiff City lost more ground in the League One title race after being held to a 1-1 draw away to Peterborough United.
The on-loan goalkeeper was first called upon to deny Peterborough forward Harry Leonard's header before making a smart low stop to thwart winger Bolu Shofowoke.
The Bluebirds trail runaway leaders Lincoln City, who clinched promotion to the Sky Bet Championship for the first time in 65 years with five games to spare courtesy of a 2-1 win at Reading on Monday.
