David Jones Jr reflects on winning Golden Boot
Dandy Town striker David Jones Jr is thrilled to have achieved another career milestone after finishing as the Premier Division’s top scorer for the first time.
The 29-year-old bagged 17 goals during the recently concluded 2025-26 league campaign to finish two clear of Young Men’s Social Club’s Zeiko Lewis and Senoj Mitchell, from Devonshire Colts, in the race for the coveted award.
“It is very special to win the Golden Boot,” an elated Jones told The Royal Gazette.
“I always knew I had the ability to do it, so it’s nice that I can prove that to myself.
“I didn’t start the season thinking about that per se, so that’s a plus. I just wanted to get the league and win trophies. I feel my team was starting to gel together a lot more and the goals just kept coming.”
Jones has come on in leaps and bounds this season having netted a career best 22 goals in all competitions, including a hat-trick against North Village that dashed the latter’s reign as league champions.
Of all the goals Jones has scored, none was more important than his second-half winner in Hornets’ 2-1 come-from-behind win against St George’s Colts at Wellington Oval on Easter Sunday that clinched the tenth league title for his side and their first in four years.
“That goal was everything and I am so happy,” he said.
“Winning the league meant everything to us. It was a team effort and I just did my part.”
Asked what has been the key to his prolific season, Jones said: “I would say my hard work and dedication to training and always wanting to improve on my craft.”
Hornets head coach Jarreau Hayward hailed his striker’s brilliant goalscoring exploits which also helped the Pembroke club achieve an impressive treble (Charity Cup, Friendship Trophy and Premier Division) this season.
“David has been massive for us this season,” he said.
“I think last season he didn’t quite settle in a new environment. But this season not only has he settled, he has put us on his shoulders.
“I believe he can be better and he wants to be better, so we will see what the future holds. In this moment, however, he has been the right man at the right time.”
