Decision day for Nahki Wells

Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere will make a decision today to determine whether to include Bermudian striker Nahki Wells in his squad for tomorrow’s EFL Trophy final showdown against Sky Bet League One rivals Stockport County at Wembley Stadium.

Wells went off early in the first half in the Hatters convincing 3-0 win away to Wimbledon on Monday after experiencing discomfort in his groin and hasn’t trained much with his team-mates since in the build up to the cup final.

In his pregame press conference, former Arsenal and England midfielder Wilshere did not rule out the possibility of Wells retaining his spot in his squad.

“Nahki felt something before the game and he was adamant that he wanted to give it a go and try,” Wilshere said. “He then obviously couldn’t after ten [17] minutes but it wasn’t as bad as expected.

“He hasn’t trained much this week so we’ll have to make a decision around him tomorrow [today], but potentially he could be available.”

Wells, 35, was making only his second appearance for the Hatters since returning from a hamstring injury in their 2-1 home win against Peterborough United at Kenilworth Road on Good Friday.

Luton were originally knocked out of the competition by League Two side Swindon Town. However, Swindon were thrown out of the competition after an investigation revealed that they had fielded two ineligible players in the Vertu Trophy Round of 16 tie on January 13 with Luton being reinstated by EFL Trophy organisers.

Swindon captain Ollie Clarke started the match while he was already serving a suspension and Aaron Drinan was used as a substitute despite not appearing on the team-sheet.

The Hatters then saw off Plymouth to set-up a semi-final at home against Northampton Town, which they came from behind to win 2-1, thanks to second-half strikes from Wells and Liam Walsh.

It will be the third meeting this season between the teams, who both share the same nickname, and first in a cup final.

Luton won the first league encounter 3-0 while the teams shared the spoils after battling to a 1-1 stalemate in the second last month.

The Hatters are making their tenth Wembley appearance, where they have come away victorious on four occasions, including against Wilshere’s former club Arsenal (2-1) in the 1988 League Cup final that landed them their first major trophy.

They also beat Coventry City in a tight EFL Championship play-off final via a penalty shoot-out on their previous outing at the iconic stadium three years ago to clinch promotion to the Premier League.

Wells is no stranger to Wembley having made two appearances there with Bradford City in the Capital One Cup Final and League Two Play-off Final and another with Huddersfield Town in the League One Play-off Final.

He also scored against Northampton in Bradford’s 3-0 triumph in the 2013 League Two Play-off Final to become the first Bermudian to do so at the new Wembley Stadium.

That feat arrived just shy of three months after becoming the first Bermudian to play at the London venue in the Bantams’ 5-0 defeat to then Premier League opponents Swansea City in the Capital One Cup Final.

Wells was also a member of Carlisle United’s squad that reached the EFL Trophy Final in 2011 but was left out of the match day squad.
