Somerset spot-on to beat St George’s in Legends Cup
Somerset regained the Legends Cup after beating perennial rivals St George’s on penalties in the annual football match at Wellington Oval last Saturday.
The West Enders overcame a 3-1 deficit to send the match to penalties, which they won 3-0 in front of a large crowd that was treated to some entertaining football as some the island’s former greats rolled back the years.
St George’s jumped out to a 2-0 advantage through strikes from Detroy Smith and Gregory Johnson before Otis Minors pulled one back for the visiting team from the penalty spot after being brought down in the area.
Art Tyrell restored St George’s two-goal advantage moments later before Somerset hit back through goals from Minors and Dion Stovell to set the stage for an exciting penalty shoot-out.
Marvin Belboda, Duane Deroza and Stovell all converted from 12 yards while St George’s failed to find the back of the net.
Somerset captain Kenny Thompson was delighted to come away with the silverware after being on the losing side on his Legends Cup debut last year.
“We are happy to have regained the cup after last year’s heavy defeat,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“Larry Hunt and Michael Corday [event and team organisers] assembled a deeper squad this year to make us more competitive.
“We started slow and fell behind but we kept a positive attitude believing we could come back.
“We knew we had the quality to come back but it’s challenging as in these games there is little chance to get a team rhythm as there are lots of subs as everybody deserves to play.
“In the end it’s a game in which we compete with the bigger picture of continuing the legacy of this great event.
“It’s great for us to wear the Trojan colours again and to play with team-mates from the past.
“The game was played in a great spirit and at this stage it’s game intelligence that is critical because we can’t move with the athleticism like before. It’s literally football more with the head than the feet.”
St George’s stalwart Derek Wright was happy to see both teams entertain the crowd.
“It was evenly matched where we dominated some periods and then they dominated late to come back into the game,” he said.
“That’s basically how it went and when you have three guys missing a penalty or them being saved you don’t stand a chance after that.
“But it was a good match and the crowd was entertained, which is the main thing, and there were some good goals.”
Somerset goalkeeper Lorenzo Lambert and St George’s defender David Signor were chosen as man of the match for their respective teams.
Somerset’s Wayne Ball and St George’s/Wellington Rovers player Twilton ‘Twilly’ Smith were both awarded the Honouree Trophy this year.
