Paul Simons is on the verge of an extraordinary feat.

The X-Roads Warriors forward has scored hat-tricks in his first two outings of the season to place himself on the verge of a hat-trick of hat-tricks.

Simons got his season off to a flyer after bagging three goals in Warriors’ 6-2 demolition of his former club PHC Zebras in their opening Group C Dudley Eve Trophy match.

He then repeated the same dose in his team’s 9-0 conquest of Young Men’s Social Club to finish atop the group and more importantly clinch their spot in the semi-finals.

Simons, who did not play in X-Roads’ opening league game of the season, attributes his prolific start to the season to fitness and good team chemistry.

“We started extra early for preseason and for once going into a season I feel really healthy,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“Now that I am getting up in age I need all the maintenance I get, so I would say that’s a big contributing factor to it; getting an early start to the preseason and being able to stay injury free all the way through that. I’m feeling the closest to 100 per cent I’ve felt in a long time.

“Other than that it is still a team sport, and my team is playing and gelling well. We were able to bring in a lot of key pieces that we were missing in previous years, so I would say it’s an accumulation of all those different factors coming together.”

Simons was one of two former PHC players, the other being Daren Usher, who scored hat-tricks against Social Club.

“It was a bit surprising. He’s been saying that he has some attacking side to his game, so he took full advantage being able to display that the other day,” Simons said.

Former PHC captain Usher complimented his team-mate on his prolific form

“Paul already has two hat-tricks in two games, so that speaks on what he brings to any team really,” he said.

As one might expect, morale and confidence is high in the Warriors’ camp after reaching the last four in the Dudley Eve Trophy.

“We didn’t get out of our group last year so getting to the semi-final is definitely exciting,” Simons said.

“It’s always a good way to start off the season if you can grab the early trophy. It just builds confidence moving forward into the rest of the season, so I would say the guys are pretty excited.”

While happy to have made a bright start to the season, Simons and his fellow team-mates are keeping their feet planted firmly on the ground.

“At the end of the day we are not getting ahead of ourselves,” the 32-year-old said. “It’s still early in the season and Social Club wasn’t even supposed to be in the Premier Division with us, so we are still trying to stay grounded and just look forward to the next game.”
