Goalkeeper mistake hands Dandy Town victory over Village
North Village 0 Dandy Town 1
Dandy Town captain Tomiko Goater capitalised on a goalkeeping mistake by Detre Bell to give Dandy Town a crucial victory over North Village at Bernard Park on Saturday night.
Goater had the easy task of tapping in to an open goal after the usually reliable Bell had spilt a soft shot from the edge of the box by Town winger Zachary Hannay.
Hornets head coach Jarreau Hayward was pleased to come away with three points from a tense game played in blustery conditions and with chances at a premium.
“I am really proud of the character of my team, some suffered a few bumps and bruises,” Hayward said. “They battled through the elements and got the three points.”
Both teams came out with attacking intent but Town often had more invention with their passing in the final third early on and gradually pushed their defensive line higher as the first half wore on.
Village often decided to play it safe as Town deployed a midblock in the first half with full backs Jalen Harvey and Che’Kai Caisey the outlets for the majority of the early Village attacks.
Town had their most dominant period in the physical midfield battle midway through the first half and from this hard work the lone goal came.
Lejaun Simmons played Hannay into space and the winger exchanged passes with last season’s top scorer David Jones Jr. Hannay produced a weak shot from just outside the penalty area but Bell spilt the ball right into the path of Goater, who made no mistake in tapping into an empty net.
Village started to seize momentum and territory back from the Dudley Eve finalists in the final minutes of the first half, notably utilising the wide areas more effectively and playing incisive passes.
Their fans and players made muted appeals for penalties after challenges by Quadir Maynard and Yeferson Ramirez. However, the shouts were waved away by Jamaican referee Daneon Parchment.
Village pushed hard for an equaliser in the final 15 minutes of the first half, with Owen Botelho feeding Jai Bean before his effort was blocked by Ramirez five minutes before the break.
The second half was more scrappy than the first as both sides continued to battle through the elements, but Village had the better of the exchanges. Botelho and Outerbridge had half chances, but neither were able to make the most of them.
Substitute Manoj Paynter was effective in his cameo and created a few clear openings late on. The former St George’s winger was fed by Caisey, and clipped in for Bean to head wide.
Defensive solidity and a lack of quality littered this marquee game, but Town kept their nerve to hold on for the clean sheet and a fourth consecutive league win.
