28-year-old is first road death of year

The island today recorded its first road fatality of the year.

A 28-year-old man died after his motorbike crashed on Middle Road, Southampton, just before 9am.

A police spokesman said officers found the rider unconscious in the road near Jews Bay at 8.55am.

The man was given CPR at the scene and rushed by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, but was later pronounced dead by doctors.

The police spokesman said more information would be released after the next of kin had been notified.

He added an investigation into the crash was underway and appealed for witnesses.
