A charity dedicated to supporting Bermuda’s women has received a $10,000 boost for its counselling support services.

The Women’s Resource Centre has announced that Sun Life Financial recently donated the money to help the charity provide support to women in the wake of the pandemic.

Tina Laws, WRC executive director, said the charity was grateful for the assistance as the demand for services has risen sharply in the midst of Covid-19.

She said: “Their generous donation will allow us to provide the support services that are very much needed during these trying times.

“Our data shows that since the end of 2019 we saw our counselling requests double during Covid-19.

“Most of those service profiles included the areas of relationship issues – including domestic disputes – marriages, mothers having to balance working from home with teaching support for children, job loss stress, grief related stress from the loss of loved ones, sexual assault related trauma and financial stress.”

Ms Laws said that about 40 per cent of the charity’s clients cannot afford the services, but support from donors mean that none are turned away.

She said: “Having to pay only adds stress to have to find funding to get the support that clients need.”

Walk-in services have been suspended, but those interested in counselling support services can contact the WRC at wrc@wrcbermuda.com or 295-3882.
