The island marked its fifth death on the roads this year after a 16-year-old girl died after a crash earlier today.

The motorcycle rider, from St George’s, was in a crash at about 12.15pm in Southampton.

A police spokesman said the girl, riding a 50cc scooter, was in a collision with a van on South Road, near the junction with Dolphin Ridge.

A police spokesman said the rider was apparently driving east while the van was headed in the opposite direction.

The rider was rushed by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after being given CPR at the scene.

The spokesman said that the victim, who succumbed to her injuries this afternoon, was expected to be identified tomorrow.

Police gave condolences to her loved ones, who have been assigned a family liaison officer for support.

The driver of the van was not injured.

The road was closed for about three hours as police processed the scene.

An investigation continues, and witnesses are asked to call Pc Walter Jackson at the Roads Policing Unit on 247-1788, or e-mail wjackson@bps.bm as soon as possible.
