David Burt, the Premier, has paid respects to Randolph Hayward, a Second World War veteran from the First Battalion, Caribbean Regiment, Bermuda Contingent.

Mr Hayward, 98, of Pembroke, died on Sunday.

The Premier commended him as a “proud veteran” who lived “a long and incredible life”, including war service in Italy and North Africa.

“I recall visiting with him and enjoying the wisdom and wise counsel he shared,” he added.

Mr Burt said Mr Hayward and St Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church were “inextricably linked, and he remained a committed and faithful member until the end of his life”.

“This stalwart of the Pembroke community retired from HM Customs after 29 years’ service and has left a dignified legacy of community involvement and support of young people and education.

“On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, I express condolences to his family as they remember the life of this man of distinction.”
