A local florist has created a tribute depicting the image of Queen Elizabeth II.

Demco Florist Bermuda’s senior florist Dustin Francisco used fresh flowers and foliage to create the portrait which is on display at the store’s Church Street location.

Carmen Phillips, owner of Demco, said the artwork, which is displayed in a gilded frame, was made using 25 bunches of imported button chrysanthemum as well as moss and birch bark, and took Mr Francisco about five hours to complete.

Ms Phillips said: “The Queen loved flowers so much – I was watching the tributes in London and wanted to do something to mark the occasion. I knew Dustin would be on board and he did it with such passion.

“One challenge was getting the correct flowers to the island on time, thanks to our floral wholesalers in Boston we managed to get them flown in on Wednesday. I believe Dustin started working on it on Friday morning.

“The main flower content is button chrysanthemum which represents longevity in the British floral arena. It is perfect because The Queen had such a long life and rein. It was so fitting.”

Ms Phillips said that the store in Devonshire where the work was created was hit by three power outages which put added pressure on Mr Francisco to complete the work on time. However, she was pleased with the final result.

She added: “It was a very ambitious undertaking and I am so pleased we managed to create something so gorgeous and unique.

“He used different colours to create shadow and depth in her face and hair – It is quite remarkable – each and every flower was hand tinted to give it a 3D look.

“People were stopping to look at it all day – it was like they paused to pay respects.”

The tribute is photographed on Demco’s Facebook page.

Ms Phillips said the store has done tributes in the past including funerals and customers’ favourite football teams.

One of the more recognised displays was of a turtle which caught the attention of floral artisans from around the world.
