A government analyst from the Ministry of Health with narcotics expertise has been awarded the 2024 Public Service Excellence Award for February.

The analyst, whose name has not been revealed owing to the sensitive nature of their role, received the award for work that includes providing crucial support to Bermuda’s law enforcement agencies by detecting the presence of controlled substances and narcotics.

Such duties are deemed high-risk, demanding and sensitive, requiring complex and technical written reports.

David Kendall, the Director of Health, accepted the award from David Burt on behalf of the analyst.

The recipient was recognised for providing a high level of service at the Central Government Laboratory and is regarded as an invaluable team member with exceptional work ethic and skill.

In addition to managing the caseload and exceeding turnaround times, the awardee dedicated their time to engaging with police, customs, treatment services and corrections personnel regarding the dangers of fentanyl in the work environment. This enables officers to protect themselves and properly manage risks.

The analyst is also admired by colleagues for being a reliable team player with a calm and focused approach to work, even during stressful times, a statement from the Government said.

Mr Burt added: “This meticulous, exacting and dedicated public officer provides forensic drug chemistry and technical analysis to assist in crime detection.

“Not only have they demonstrated the ability to multitask and work under pressure but the recipient has demonstrated a sound knowledge of the forensics discipline carried out in the laboratory.

“The commitment to service excellence is commendable.”

Cherie Whitter, the Head of the Public Service, said: “On behalf of the entire public service executive, congratulations for the impressive mark you’ve made.

“Your work is valued and appreciated.”

The PSEA programme was designed to recognise public officers who demonstrate admirable service delivery.
