Bermuda is Love: legal aid and justice events

Bermuda is Love

Opening doors to legal aid and ensuring access to justice marks the latest campaign by the group Bermuda is Love.

Its string of April events under the social media hashtag #FightForJustice opened over the weekend with a free legal advice clinic at the Sammy Wilson Community Centre in Hamilton.

A talk on human rights in Bermuda goes ahead this Thursday from 5.30pm to 7pm at the Human Rights Commission’s offices on Church Street in Hamilton.

On April 28, the wellness centre Solstice offers its Tree of Life Workshop, again at the Sammy Wilson Community Centre, from 1pm to 4pm — aimed at strategies for people to uncover their strengths by exploring the strands of their lives and backgrounds.

On April 30, the work of the education reform unit comes up for a community discussion at the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce on Front Street from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

The campaign finishes on May 4 with a legal aid workshop at the Women’s Resource Centre in Sofia House, Church Street, from noon to 2pm.

The group said it backed equality, fairness and the protection of human rights.

“Bermuda Is Love believes that we all deserve to be treated equally, fairly, and with respect.

“By providing individuals with the means to seek legal assistance and support, we ultimately help reinforce the principle that everyone should be treated equally before the law.”

The group said the denial of justice “undermines the principle of equality before the law and perpetuates socio-economic inequalities within society”.

“Legal aid also ensures that individuals have the means to challenge discriminatory practices, remedy human rights violations, and advocate for social change.”

All events are free to attendees.
