Rubis gifts almost $6,300 each to four charities
A fuel and service station company spread more than $25,000 in donations across four charities in its annual Christmas donation drive.
Rubis gave a cheque for $6,298 to the non-profit organisations, which was made possible from the proceeds of its 2024 calendar.
Jermaine Simons, a sales manager at the company, said: “The designated 2024 charities have missions that support a variety of initiatives that contribute to community-focused areas that include the infant child’s environment, autism services, the education of our marine environment, as well as visual arts and crafts.
“Rubis is proud that its annual calendar programme has been able to make a meaningful impact to the island.”
Mr Simons said that for a third consecutive year, the fundraising was carried out by offering coupons to everyone who bought a Rubis calendar.
Karla Lacey, the chief executive of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, said that her team was “honoured” to have been selected for a donation.
She added: “Their recognition and support for the work we do — to ensure the ocean around Bermuda is loved and protected, is truly appreciated.”
Heidi Cowen, from the Bermuda Arts Centre, said: “We are thrilled to receive your donation.
“We work tirelessly to support local art, and contributions from companies that believe in our mission are not only welcome but also an honour.”
Fiona Dill, the director and trustee of It Takes a Village Foundation, said that she and her team “couldn’t be more grateful” to receive the donation.
The charity focuses on maintaining the physical and emotional wellbeing of vulnerable pregnant women and their babies.
Ms Dill explained: “We offer support services that have a direct and positive impact on women’s experience of pregnancy, birth and post-partum that can have a long-term effect on the wellbeing of the whole family.
“For those that are struggling financially, we are also able to offer help with Belco bills, grocery bills and pharmacy purchases.”
She added: “This donation from Rubis will ensure the sustainability of our services and helps us be able to support more families.”
Thea Furbert, a cofounder and the board chairwoman of Tomorrow’s Voices, an early-intervention centre for autism, said: “Your donation support along with others have helped in a tremendous way and continue to ensure that we are able to provide these much needed services to our clients, advancing their social skills, enabling them to be woven seamlessly into the fabric of society.”
Jahnae Harvey, exective director of Tomorrow’s Voices, added: “We are grateful to Rubis for their support of Tomorrow's Voices.
“Their generosity aids us in continuing to subsidise parent fees for our clinical programmes, making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals with autism and developmental disabilities.”
The charities that will benefit from Rubis’s 2025 calendar drive will be the Bermuda Football Association, Greenrock, the Portuguese Cultural Association, Scars and St John Ambulance.
