Curb to honour Eva Hodgson’s legacy

An antiracism organisation will celebrate the life of civil rights trailblazer Eva Hodgson this month.

Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda said that the event will take place at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity on May 29 — exactly five years after Dr Hodgson passed away.

Dr Hodgson, born in 1924, was the first president of the Amalgamated Bermuda Union of Teachers and earned a PhD in African history and Black American history from Columbia University, becoming one of the first Black Bermudians to earn a doctorate.

The charity explained: “As an educator, historian, author and fearless activist, she dedicated her life to speaking truth to power, advocating for systemic change and encouraging generations of Bermudians to know their worth and their history.”

It added: “Though she passed away in 2020, her vision, courage and relentless pursuit of justice continue to inspire.”

• For more information about the celebration, which will take place from 12.30pm until 2pm, contact executivedirector@uprootingracism.org
