The “vital service” of the Department of Corrections was celebrated during a week of events.

National Corrections Officers Week 2025, which was observed from May 4, began with a church service at Elliot Primary School where community members gathered to honour the sacrifices made by those who served the island’s prisons.

Following the service, a party was held at the school for the children of department staff.

A formal proclamation was then delivered on the steps of City Hall to mark the official start of the observance.

Kim Wilkerson, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, attended a tea for retired staff held on Wednesday at the Co-Educational Facility in St George's.

She said: “Corrections officers and staff are fundamental to the safe and fair functioning of our criminal justice system.

"They carry out a demanding and often invisible duty with diligence and professionalism.

“That week was more than ceremonial — it was a deliberate reaffirmation of our commitment to improving their work environment and ensuring their needs are heard, understood and acted upon.

“Attending the tea with retired staff was part of a broader strategy — to listen, engage and move forward collaboratively towards a more modern and supportive corrections system."

Keeva Joell-Benjamin, the Commissioner of Corrections, said the week honoured the “intricate, complex and essential work” performed by officers and staff.

She added: “The tea event on Wednesday allowed us to show our appreciation to retired colleagues whose service laid the foundation for the progress we continue to pursue."

The week also featured a range of “community engagement and internal wellness activities”.

On Tuesday, corrections staff visited schools and early childhood centres including Francis Patton Primary School, Lyceum Preschool, Elliot Primary School, Happy Valley Day Care and Lagoon Park Preschool, to read to young students and foster community connection.

On Thursday, officers presented carnations to female residents at the Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Residence, Lefroy House and Sylvia Richardson Care Facility, to mark Mother's Day.

On Friday, staff across all correctional facilities participated in an event promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

The week's formal celebrations concluded with a staff appreciation dinner.

Ms Wilkerson recently outlined several continuing initiatives — including recruitment efforts, wellness consultations and infrastructure improvements — that aim to better support officers and ensure the department's long-term sustainability.
