Residents have been invited to an event on May 19 marking 100 years since the birth of the civil rights icon Malcolm X.

The event at the Dellwood Middle School auditorium will be held from 6.30pm under the theme “Always Learning”.

It will offer attendees an opportunity to reflect on personal stories.

Alex Scott, a former premier, Victoria Pearman, a former ombudsman, and others will talk about their experiences at the event.

Organisers said that many of Bermuda’s older generation were inspired by Malcolm X’s autobiography, and the event will be held in appreciation of his global contribution.

A spokesman highlighted that the late civil rights leader, who lost his father at the age of 6 in an accident, became class president of his mostly White middle school.

During his mother’s years-long hospital admission, he turned to crime and was imprisoned at 21, but later became a spokesman for the Nation of Islam.

Malcolm X continued to evolve and emerged as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, a global icon.

While he was assassinated in 1965, his spirit lives on, the organisers said.
