Grateful Bread calls for volunteers

Volunteers with The Grateful Bread help organise a free giveaway event for those in need (Photograph supplied)

A group of volunteers has asked members of the public to help sort through a container of donated goods after a successful giveaway event.

The Grateful Bread hosted a donation drive on May 3 at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Hamilton.

People left with bags of clothing and household goods such as bedding.

Juliana Snelling, the director of the community group, said: “Thank you to each one of you for being part of a positive impact on our community and volunteering your time.”

The event hired cleaners who were residents of the charity Home, which offers people struggling with homelessness a place to get back on their feet.

An anonymous donor also bought food from Docksider Pub and Restaurant for attendees, with the surplus later given to people along Court Street and Union Street.

Ms Snelling offered her thanks to everyone who participated in the event, including the co-ordinators, truckers and “heavy lifters” who moved the goods.

The Grateful Bread offers new or high-quality used goods to people in need.

It will host a container-sorting event at the end of June to process items that were returned during the giveaway.

Ms Snelling said it was hoped that the event will make sure items are “good quality and organised correctly for next time”.

She added: “Any leftovers that are not great quality will be donated to the Second Look Charity Thrift Shop next to Mount Saint Agnes Academy.”

The sorting event will take place on June 26 between 5pm and 7pm at Ashley Storage on Mill Creek Lane, Pembroke.

Donations will not be accepted on the day.
