A charity donated $22,500 to three organisations after hosting its Gas-O-Rama annual fundraiser.

The Hamilton Lions Club split the proceeds of Gas-O-Rama into three $7,500 cheques that were presented on the steps of Rubis Warwick petrol station yesterday.

Representatives from Big Brothers Big Sisters Bermuda, Dandy Town Youth Foundation and Special Olympics Bermuda welcomed the cheques.

Jeffrey Trott, the president of the Hamilton Lions Club, said the three recipients “needed some sort of sponsorship” and that the organisation was happy to step up.

He added: “It’s all about helping these organisations to move forward.

“They all chose to be productive citizens and that’s really what the Lions Club is about — giving and helping.

“That little extra will go a really long way.”

Mr Trott said the Gas-O-Rama was a two-pronged fundraiser where members sold raffle tickets and washed cars.

He explained that the Dandy Town junior football team helped with the carwash the same day that they had a game.

Mr Trott added that some of the cash was also donated by Rubis, which the Hamilton Lions Club has partnered with for years.

Mr Trott said that a nice aspect of the Gas-O-Rama was the amount of people who chose to donate instead of buying a service.

He explained: “Someone would come up and say, ‘I’m not interested in purchasing a ticket but here’s $20’.

“It really adds up.”

Mr Trott said the Hamilton Lions Club raised $3,500 from donations alone.

He added that the recipients were deserving of the funds because of the work they did in the community.

He said: “Big Brothers Big Sisters is extremely instrumental in our society; the Special Olympics are definitely important because they fly people around the world.

“Dandy Town, they use their funds to take some of these young children abroad.

“Some of these children have never been overseas before in their lives.”

Mr Trott thanked everyone who assisted in the Gas-O-Rama, from the raffle sponsors and buyers to the Hamilton Lions Club’s management committee.
