Police commit to safe holiday weekend

Heightened police presence with high-visibility patrols will be conducted across the island to ensure a safe holiday weekend, the Bermuda Police Service have said.

The police urged residents to display “responsible behaviour throughout this holiday weekend, whether on land or out on the water”.

Detective Superintendent Dennis Astwood said: “The Bermuda Police Service, working with the Bermuda Reserve Police, are committed to ensuring a peaceful and safe environment for all during this year's Bermuda Day holiday festivities, from Friday’s morning races in St George’s and afternoon parade in the City of Hamilton, through the weekend.”

The BPS said police officers will conduct roadside sobriety checks and will implement appropriate stop-and-search at various locations to promote responsible behaviour, while mitigating instances of violence and antisocial behaviour.

Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting any suspicious activities by calling 211 or 911.

The police said designated no-parking areas will be clearly marked and specific times for road closures will be outlined in the Official Gazette.

When road closures are in effect for the City of Hamilton, vehicle movement will be restricted until the conclusion of the parade.

The BPS urged the public to co-operate and adhere to the traffic guidelines, which it said are crucial in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants and spectators during Bermuda Day celebrations.

For the Bermuda Day Half-Marathon Derby, roads along the race routes will close at 7.30am tomorrow morning.

Motorists travelling in the East End, especially those with morning flights out of LF Wade International Airport, were advised to plan their routes accordingly to avoid disruption.

Police said detours and delays are to be expected, with detailed information available on the Government’s official website https://www.gov.bm and the Corporation of Hamilton’s website https://www.cityofhamilton.bm.
