King Charles III ‘heartened’ by work on climate change
Efforts to sustain the island’s natural beauty and support the environment were highlighted by King Charles III in a Bermuda Day message to the Governor.
A post on the Government House Facebook page shared His Majesty’s remarks.
It said: “As you and the people of Bermuda celebrate the auspicious occasion of Bermuda Day, my wife and I have great pleasure in conveying our warmest congratulations to your Premier and to the people of Bermuda.
“I cherish greatly the strong ties between us and know that we will continue working together on important climate change and environmental issues.
“I have such fond memories of my visit to Bermuda 55 years ago and remain very proud to have opened Bermuda’s Parliament on the 350th anniversary.
“Throughout my visit I was struck by Bermuda’s stunning natural beauty and rich heritage.”
The King wrote: “I am heartened by the valuable work being undertaken in Bermuda to combat climate change, including harnessing live corals for coastal protection, progressing the transition to renewable energy and community fundraising to establish the High Point Nature Reserve.
“My wife and I would like to take this opportunity to send our very best wishes for the year ahead.”
David Burt, the Premier, said that Bermuda Day is “a treasured time for us to celebrate who we are as Bermudians, our vibrant culture, our shared history, and the pride that we feel in calling this island home”.
He added: “This year’s theme, ‘The Future is Now’, reminds us that the Bermuda we are building for tomorrow begins with the spirit, talent and choices of today.
“From students developing cutting-edge apps to artists transforming our buildings into powerful visual and digital art, to local businesses embracing new tools like digital finance, Bermudians continue to prove that innovation and cultural pride go hand in hand.
“As we gather to celebrate this special day, we see the essence of Bermuda come alive, whether it’s the determination of our athletes in the half-marathon derby, the precision of cyclists racing through the streets in the Sinclair Packwood Memorial cycle race, or the hard work and creativity on display in the floats, costumes and performances of the Bermuda Day Parade.
“Together, we honour our traditions while embracing the future with confidence and unity.”
Mr Burt said: “Let us use this day to reflect on how far we have come and may we be inspired by what lies ahead.
“Every beat of the drum, every step in the parade and every proud Bermudian lining the streets reminds us that we are a people full of possibility.”
He thanked Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport, and his “dedicated” team at the ministry and in the Department of Culture, for making sure that Bermuda Day and Heritage Month continue to evolve and bring the community together.
The Premier added: “On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, I wish everyone a safe, joyful and inspiring Bermuda Day.”
