Organist to perform in St George’s next month
An organist based in Scotland will give a free concert in St George’s next month.
Michael Bawtree, a concert organist who lived in Bermuda from 1992 to 1995, will perform at the surroundings of St Peter’s Church, Their Majesties Chapell on June 13.
The hour-long performance will include music from Handel, Bach, Elgar and Mendelssohn alongside pieces by Scottish composers.
Mr Bawtree lived on the island when his father was the final Commanding Officer of HMS Malabar. He then headed to study at Cambridge University in England.
He said: “This return visit to Bermuda is particularly special as I spent much of my teenage years here, living at Dockyard when my father was working for the Royal Navy at HMS Malabar.
“When I was living in Bermuda, I performed organ recitals at the Cathedral in Hamilton and at our local church in Somerset.
“Thirty years later, it is a thrill to head to the East End of the island to perform a free concert in the historic surroundings of St Peter’s Church, Their Majesties Chapell.”
Mr Bawtree, who is a freelance conductor and organist, works across Britain and Europe, among other places.
He has performed at the Washington National Cathedral in the US, Notre Dame in Paris, Westminster Abbey in England and Auckland Town Hall in Australia.
Mr Bawtree regularly conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and also conducted music at King Charles III’s “Scottish coronation” in Edinburgh in July 2023.
He has performed as a soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of India and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
