Widespread sobriety checkpoints ahead of weekend

Rigorous island-wide roadside sobriety checkpoints are to go ahead this week.

The Bermuda Police Service issued a notice of the move in the Official Gazette.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police provided the notice in compliance with the requirement of section 35BD (1) of the Road Traffic Act 1947.

A spokesman for the BPS said: “It is by no means our intention to prevent you from enjoying yourself and having a few drinks.

“All that we ask is that you do so responsibly. That includes having a plan to get home without driving any vehicle. You must take personal responsibility for your actions.”

He added: “That notwithstanding, we should also be our brother’s or sister’s keeper.

“If you’re part of a group where someone who has been drinking is planning to drive, please do your best to convince them not to, even if it means taking away their keys.

“While the life you save may be your own, are you prepared to live with the fact that you took the life of another person because you decided to drive drunk or otherwise impaired?”

On Wednesday, there will be checkpoints in St George’s, Hamilton Parish, Smith’s, Devonshire, Pembroke, Paget, Warwick, Southampton and Sandys.
