Day of reflection on figures of ‘strength, progress and unity’
David Burt, the Premier, has paid tribute to the figures across the island’s history whose legacies are honoured on National Heroes Day.
“As we gather this holiday weekend to commemorate National Heroes Day, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the remarkable individuals who have shaped our island’s history,” Mr Burt said.
“This day provides us with the opportunity to reflect on those who selflessly contributed to the betterment of Bermuda and to improving the lives of Bermudians.
“We honour our national heroes: Dame Lois Browne-Evans, Edgar Fitzgerald Gordon, Pauulu Kamarakafego, Sir Henry James ‘Jack’ Tucker, Mary Prince, Gladys Misick Morrell, Sir Edward Richards and Sir John W. Swan ‒ heroes whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our society. Their legacies continue to inspire us all, reminding us of the strength, progress, and unity of our island.”
Mr Burt added: “National Heroes Day is also an opportunity to remember the countless unsung heroes who contribute to the fabric of our community, those who serve in the public sector, healthcare, education and beyond. Each day, these individuals give their time and energy to improve lives, build stronger communities and make Bermuda a better place for us all.
“As we celebrate, I encourage everyone across Bermuda to enjoy the festivities and embrace the spirit of togetherness. For those participating in Carnival activities, take a moment to recognise our shared history with the Caribbean. This connection is part of what makes us who we are today.”
Mr Burt closed by calling on the community to “take care of each other and enjoy the holiday responsibly”.
