Parade caps National Heroes weekend celebrations
An electrifying atmosphere of music and dance enveloped parts of Hamilton as masqueraders and spectators danced through the streets in the annual Revel de Road parade.
The event was the culmination of a weekend of celebrations and closed with a final party at Bernard Park.
Under the scorching midday sun, revellers poured into the City Hall car park to prepare for the parade which passed through Victoria Street, Cedar Avenue, Angle Street and onward to Dutton Avenue for the last dance-off.
Three trucks — one outfitted with a bar — lined up on Wesley Street as partygoers replenished for the parade.
At 12.40pm, the disc jockey gave the final call that the parade, headlined by Nova Mas International, was ready to hit the road.
A large crowd gathered and on the signal of the police officers on duty, the trucks set off with masqueraders in tow.
Stephen and Leslie Cameron, visiting from Scotland, stood alongside Victoria Street and snapped photographs as the parade passed Dismont Drive. The couple were excited to take in the parade.
Mr Cameron said: “The parade is fantastic, I’ve never seen anything like it.
“We don’t have this in Scotland. We came here to Bermuda for vacation, and today we came to Hamilton to see the parade.”
He added: “The crowd is large and we totally enjoy it.”
Mr Cameron said the couple would be leaving on Friday.
He said: “This is our first excursion here and we came to see the real Bermuda.”
His wife added: “It’s really beautiful here, we are enjoying it. I love the ocean and it’s very colourful.”
Along Cedar Avenue, families gathered in chairs to watch the parade as it snaked along the road to soca music from a passing truck.
Weekend events included a well attended “Swizzle at Sunrise” party on Saturday at the Arboretum where Trinidad soca sensation Nailah Blackman entertained the crowd with hits.
Popular Barbados disc jockey DJ Puffy, Bermuda’s own DJ Rusty G and others kept the music playing.
The parade was kick-started by the Space Jam J’Ouvert party at Bernard Park where revellers partied from dawn to sunrise and prepared to Revel de Road.
