New members sought for Human Rights Tribunal

Residents have been encouraged to apply to serve on Bermuda’s Human Rights Tribunal.

Seth Darrell, the head of the Selection and Appointment Committee established in line with the Human Rights Act 1981, said applicants should have “experience, interest in, understanding or knowledge of human rights or human rights issues”.

He added: “Those applying for chair positions must be qualified barristers and attorneys with at least five years standing and have knowledge of human rights law.

“To avoid potential conflicts of interests, current members of the legislature, judiciary and Public Service are not eligible to apply.”

Mr Darrell said that panel members, who receive compensation for each hearing, “contribute their distinct experiences and perspectives to a process grounded in integrity, impartiality and understanding”.

Applications should be submitted via humanrights.bmby 3pm on July 21.
