Anne Burrell remembered as ‘dear friend’ of Bermuda
A celebrity TV chef has been remembered as a passionate supporter of Bermuda.
Anne Burrell, who headlined the Taste of Bermuda food festival in 2022, played a vital role in elevating the event’s experience, Owen Darrell, the tourism and culture minister, said.
Ms Burrell, 55, a Food Network star, was reportedly found unconscious in her New York apartment on Tuesday. The cause of death has not been confirmed.
At the 2022 food festival, she gave a cooking demonstration in front of hundreds of onlookers on Front Street.
Mr Darrell said: “Chef Anne was more than a culinary icon; she was a passionate supporter of Bermuda and a dear friend to many within our community.
“Her warmth, energy and unmistakable enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of meeting her.”
He said her contributions to the island’s culinary landscape were truly significant and that she helped to showcase the island's unique culinary heritage on an international stage.
The minister added: “She also shared her time and expertise with the next generation of Bermudian chefs, offering encouragement and insight to students at Bermuda College, a gesture that meant the world to them.”
He said Ms Burrell’s deep affection for the island was evident in her continued visits and her genuine connection with Bermuda.
Mr Darrell added: “Her spirit, talent and generosity will not be forgotten.
“We are grateful for all she gave to Bermuda, and we honour her legacy with sincere appreciation.”
Before her attendance at Taste of Bermuda three years ago, Ms Burrell said: “Bermuda is such a beautiful and special place, and nothing makes me happier than to cook for people and it is truly an honour to meet with culinary students who will be our chefs of the future.”
In a social media post, the City of Hamilton said it was saddened at Ms Burrell’s passing.
It noted: “Anne brought her fearless energy, signature flair and infectious joy to Taste of Bermuda in 2022 — leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met, from her lively cooking demos to her engaging meet-and-greet with fans.”
It added: “Thank you, Anne, for sharing your light with Bermuda.
“You will be missed but never forgotten.”
