BFRS recruits in solidarity with people impacted by cancer
The island’s newest firefighters were “deeply” moved when they took part in an overnight charity event to unite with people affected by cancer.
Members of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service’s 2025 recruit course raised $2,500 by participating in Relay for Life last month.
Funds from the event support Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s Equal Access Fund, to make sure that the centre’s services can be available to everyone without a co-pay.
A government statement said: “Members of the recruit course united to walk continuously for 24 hours, demonstrating their commitment to building a stronger, healthier community.”
Fire Officer Tarreko Wilson, a spokesman for the class, added: “The experience was not only rewarding but also deeply moving.
“We enjoyed every moment spent walking, sharing stories and honouring those who have battled cancer.
“It was a reminder of the strength of our community and the importance of coming together for a common goal.”
The recruits’ efforts and dedication were commended by Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security.
He said: “Their decision to support Relay for Life reflects the values of service and compassion that we hold dear.
“It’s heartening to see our newest recruits so eager to give back and uplift the community.”
A BFRS spokesperson added: “This initiative is a powerful example of what the BFRS stands for — service beyond the emergency.
“These recruits have shown that being a firefighter is not just about responding to incidents but also about making meaningful contributions to the lives of others.
“Their teamwork and compassion are a credit to the uniform.”
