Beautification work around Bermuda sign completed

The City of Hamilton has said it has now completed paving and landscape works to accentuate the Bermuda marquee sign on Front Street.

A spokeswoman said the work was carried out by Brown and Company landscapers with the goal of enhancing the area around the much photographed spot.

“These upgrades were designed to elevate the space to match the vibrancy and artistic impact of the marquee sign, which has become a must-see attraction for both locals and visitors since its installation in 2023 as part of the City’s Vivid: Public Art Initiative,” she added.

“Key improvements included the installation of stone-crete pavers to replace the previous concrete slab, enhancing the visual appeal of the site, and upgraded drainage systems to prevent pooling after heavy rainfall and improve year-round accessibility.

“During construction, the nearby bike-parking bays were temporarily inaccessible for public safety. These have now been fully restored and are open for use.”

The spokeswoman said the improvements were part of the original vision for the sign, but were delayed to accommodate legislation that required a revised stormwater system.

“The upgraded infrastructure now meets all regulatory standards and supports the possibility of future developments, such as a harbour front boardwalk connection,” she added.

Jessica Astwood, the director of marketing and communications for the City, said: “This enhancement project ensures the surrounding area reflects the same level of quality and pride as the sign itself.

“It’s more than a photo opportunity; it’s a celebration of Bermuda’s culture, creativity and community.”

The City of Hamilton thanked the public for their patience during the construction period and said it looked forward to welcoming everyone to enjoy the refreshed and revitalised waterfront space.
