Nakisha’s green thumb earns top marks in competition
Gardeners from across the island were recognised this month as the Department of Health and the Department of Parks hosted the Bermuda Parish Garden Competition.
At an awards event, Nakisha Burgess was named the Garden Competition winner as well as the winner of the community garden category.
Other winners included Edward Ball, who won the large garden category, Alshia Lugo, who won the small garden category, Frances Furbert, winner of the non-traditional garden category, and Warwick Academy, which won the school garden category.
The competition was spearheaded by Kevin Santucci, the facilitator of the Grow Eat Save initiative, and was designed to encourage and recognise people who cultivate gardens in their community and promote healthier living and food security.
Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said: “Gardening is more than a pastime. It is a powerful tool for improving health, strengthening food security and fostering resilient communities.
“Around the world, we see its impact, and here in Bermuda, we have a unique opportunity to embrace gardening year-round as a means of ensuring fresh, nutritious food is accessible to all.”
Ms Wilson said she was deeply aware of the challenges faced by rising rates of diabetes and hypertension on the island, along with greater pressure on Bermuda’s healthcare system.
“Gardening puts fresh, wholesome food within reach, right in our backyards, on our patios and in our communities,” she said.
“It reduces dependence on processed and imported goods, lowers the risk of diet-related illnesses and fosters a culture of self-sufficiency.”
