Town hall to place CCTV in spotlight

Residents can learn more about Bermuda’s upgraded CCTV system during a town hall meeting on Thursday.

A statement from the Ministry of National Security said the event will provide an update on the network, which incorporates 225 cameras offering 460 views across 130 locations island-wide.

It will also allow attendees to hear more about “how the network supports public safety, protects privacy and assists law enforcement”.

The statement added: “Additionally, an expansion phase is under way that will see 20 more site locations added, increasing coverage to 150 locations island-wide and further strengthening public safety.”

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons and Alexander White, the Privacy Commissioner, will answer questions during the event.

Mr Weeks said: “This town hall is about transparency, accountability and working together for a safer Bermuda.

“These cameras are here to support public safety but they are only part of the solution.

“We need the community's involvement, starting with showing up and engaging.”

The event will take place at St Paul AME Church Centennial Hall on Victoria Street from 6pm to 8pm on July 3.
