Fundraisers reach out for help early to address high demand
Organisers of an annual fundraising event called for support earlier than ever before in response to “a rising need”.
The Gina Spence Programme invited donations for its Each One Reach One drive, which aims to provide school supplies to more than 500 children.
Now in its thirteenth year, Each One Reach One was described as “a trusted, community-based initiative that ensures no child starts school feeling less than or left behind”.
The campaign serves children who are grieving the loss of a parent or loved one, experiencing financial instability or have been referred by community partners.
Those organisations include Pals, Friends of Hospice, Star, the Bermuda Road Safety Council and Family Centre.
“At the core of this campaign is a child who simply wants to show up ready to learn, belong and feel seen,” said Ms Spence, an advanced grief recovery specialist and the founder of the charity.
She added: “We are committed to doing whatever it takes to make that possible because education is not a privilege, it’s a right.”
A $150 donation provides one child with a first-day starter kit, which the charity said is an exclusive package available only through its campaign.
Each pack includes a new school bag, a school shirt and bottoms, socks, and a set of underwear and undershirts.
The items are said to “help restore dignity and confidence for children navigating personal loss or financial hardship”.
Ms Spence said many of the students served would not have what they need for the first day of school without the programme.
She said the scheme continues to expand its reach and impact thanks to a 13-year partnership with the Gibbons Company as well as support from CedarBridge Academy and MediaVille.
It is hoped that the programme can raise $80,000 this year to support more than 500 students. The charity said that early giving is “critical” to meeting the goal.
“Our children deserve more than survival,” Ms Spence added.
“They deserve dignity, opportunity and a fair start. To those who have supported us in the past, thank you.
“To those considering it this year, now is the time. Together we can make sure every child is dressed for success.”
Donations can be made online at www.gspcharity.com via direct bank transfer, or in person at the Gina Spence Programme’s office at 61 Verdmont Road, Hamilton.
