Curb releases Emancipation Day flag for Cup Match
An antiracism group has released a commemorative Cup Match flag underscoring the fight for emancipation.
The flag, created by Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda, blends the silhouette of a cricketer with that of Mary Prince with a broken chain.
A spokeswoman for Curb said the flag not only honoured the fight for freedom that led to Emancipation Day but the iconic game associated with the holiday as well.
She added: “Bermudians know how to celebrate. Our holidays are vibrant, joyous and full of life.
“Yet, amid the fun, we often overlook the importance of commemoration.
“At Curb, especially during Cup Match, we believe it's essential to reflect on the origins and purpose of this uniquely Bermudian celebration.
“Cup Match is far more than a cricket match — it represents unity, culture, resilience and the recognition of our freedom."
Emancipation flags come in Somerset and St George’s colours.
The flags can be bought for $20 at Curb’s office in the International Centre on Bermudiana Road, Hamilton.
Buyers can confirm their orders by e-mailing admin@uprootingracism.org or by calling 707-1496.
