Food festival on hold amid restructuring plans
A seafood festival in the Olde Towne will not be held this year, the Corporation of St George has announced.
The corporation said the decision to cancel the popular St George's Seafood Festival was made as it works to realign and integrate major events more effectively within its operations.
In its August newsletter, town manager Candy-Lee Foggo said: “The Corporation of St George greatly values its strong partnerships and the community's enthusiasm for the seafood festival.
“We appreciate your understanding as we take this time to strengthen our event framework for the future.”
In a brief comment, Sonja Clarke, who runs Sensational Delights — an eatery in Hamilton — said the cancellation was “unfortunate” as it affects her business’s plans.
Wet weather conditions forced organisers to postpone the event last year, one week after it was put off because of inclement conditions.
The event was first held in 2022 to promote the island’s seafood culture, fused with entertainment and community.
It drew large numbers then and in 2023 as residents and visitors sampled a variety of seafood delights on offer.
In the newsletter, Ms Foggo also reminded residents and businesses to review hurricane storm plans, stock essential supplies and to be aware of power and communication protocols.
It covered a visit by Quinell Francis, the Mayor of St George, to the Dorset town of Lyme Regis to participate in the Somers Day Parade.
The newsletter said her trip placed the spotlight on the “enduring twinning relationship” between the towns.
