A new charity designed to help young women interested in creative fields is expected to produce a film on National Hero Mary Prince.

Girls in Film, Technology, Entertainment and Design will aim to prepare teenagers for careers in the fields and will launch during the opening of the Mary Prince Women’s Entrepreneurial and Leadership Conference tomorrow.

Dana Selassie, the founder and director of the conference and Zyhon International, said Gifted’s recent charitable status marked “a pivotal milestone in our mission”.

Actress Lana Young and other Bermudians are on the charity’s board and the launch will involve a masterclass for girls aged 13 to 17 led by Nigerian businesswoman Ibukun Awosika.

Ms Awosika, the first chairwoman of the First Bank of Nigeria, headlined the conference last year and will do so again on August 7 and 8 at Pier Six.

A statement said: “Participants [in the launch] will discover Gifted’s upcoming six-month programme and their inaugural major project — producing a youth-directed film on Mary Prince.”

Dr Selassie added: “This transcends a conference — we are cultivating a culture of women who lead with authority, who raise children with vision and who claim spaces where we have been told we do not belong.”

She said: “This is not about excluding our men; it is about creating spaces where women can expand, thrive and become a more impactful part of our community.

“We encourage our brothers to do the inner work too, so that together we can heal, grow and build a stronger, more balanced future for all of us."
