The Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard had a busy start to the Cup Match holiday, handling two separate reports of injuries last Thursday.

According to incident reports, at about 12.45pm the Maritime Operations Centre was contacted by the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service about dispatching paramedics to Darrell’s Island to help someone who was unable to move because of severe back pain.

The MOC worked with the BFRS to co-ordinate medics being picked up by members of the RBR Coastguard at the Darrell’s Wharf public dock.

About an hour later, the BFRS contacted the MOC again about another emergency call they had received concerning a 40-foot sail boat in the Great Sound with seven people on board.

“The 911 call is transferred through to Bermuda Maritime Operations who attempt to locate the sailing sloop involved so that RBR Coastguard can rendezvous with them,” the incident report said.

It was later confirmed that the medical case involved a suspected heart attack and the sailboat was located west of Pearl Island shortly after 2pm.

The patient was placed on oxygen and taken to Albouy’s Point, where he was transferred to an ambulance and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.
