Proposals sought for new Tulo Valley greenhouse

The Government hopes to tear down and replace a storm-damaged greenhouse in Pembroke.

A request for information, published on the government procurement website, said that the intention was to replace the greenhouse and shade building at the Tulo Valley Park and Government Plant Nursery.

“To help develop design requirements, the Ministry of Public Works and Environment is seeking design and fabrication information from steel suppliers or contractors on steel frame and roof truss structures appropriate for a new production greenhouse system,” the RFI said.

“The information will help the Government identify a suitable solution and subsequently solicit proposals from reputable entities for the provision of design, fabrication and installation services for the production greenhouse system at Tulo Valley.”

The Tulo Valley Park and Government Plant Nursery is used to grow native and endemic plant species to be used across the island both on government facilities such as the Botanical Gardens and private land developments.

“The plants serve to maintain agricultural landscapes, planting beds and Bermuda’s green woodlands,” the RFI documents said.

“Tulo Valley also provides plant protection services pursuant to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.”

The nursery was previously rebuilt in 2005-06 after Hurricane Fabian caused the site significant damage in 2003.

Since then, the RFI documents said, many mechanical components and steel members had deteriorated because of “wear and tear, hurricane damage and the corrosive salt-laden atmosphere of the island”.

Interested respondents have been invited to recommend a steel-framed production greenhouse system with a retractable roof, ventilation systems, flooding tables, heating benches, propagation benches and misting or sprinkler systems, with other suggestions welcome.

The RFI also included plans for the 2005 greenhouse at the site, along with diagrams of the facilities still in place that are proposed for demolition.

The deadline for submissions is 3pm on August 20.
